Date: 2008-11-18 05:53 am (UTC)The stretch across Alabama from Sumter county in the west to Russell county in the east is known as The Black Belt. No slur there, the soil's deep, rich, and black. The area is now impoverished, rapidly depopulating, skews to older population, rural, and majority black. Driving from Demopolis to Montgomery is depressing. So much has disappeared since I was a kid. Whole towns vanished. Likely that's been for the better for the poorest. It's still unsettling to see an area slipping away.
In MS the story's similar. The Mississippi Delta counties going Democratic is what gave hope for defeating Sen. Wicker. Unfortunately the MS Dems nominated a "me too" Blue Dog Lite in Musgrove and Wicker won.
