Both my parents were born to life on dryland cotton farms in west texas. Dunno why you're seeing that trend. Before the election, I got email from them about why it was important to vote against Obama. (Not for McCain, just against Obama.) *big shrug*

I'm a dork. Now I see that the images are a link to another site with the story explaining the maps. :)

We recently went through the 1871 Hamilton ON census looking for head of households of African origin living in the region at the time for a book project with the city. Out of the 300 some odd we found only three weren't born in the USA. Two born in Canada and one black person actually from Africa. Who also had his career stated as "herbalist"... hmmm.

See that dark blue county on the GA side of the GA/AL state line, it's where AL encroaches farthest east… That's Muscogee Co., my home. We couldn't be more proud.

Thanks for mentioning that, I didn't notice it till I got to your comment.

I assumed that I was pretty sure it was red v. blue states map of sorts, but your help, helped me realize I was actually right, in a way.

Why thank you - I used to be angry_biscuit, but I changed and therefore the name had to as well.

My very first screen name ever was nails3jesus0, that one is still my favorite. ;-)

Thanks. This's a nice set of maps. They convey a lot of info in an interesting form.
The stretch across Alabama from Sumter county in the west to Russell county in the east is known as The Black Belt. No slur there, the soil's deep, rich, and black. The area is now impoverished, rapidly depopulating, skews to older population, rural, and majority black. Driving from Demopolis to Montgomery is depressing. So much has disappeared since I was a kid. Whole towns vanished. Likely that's been for the better for the poorest. It's still unsettling to see an area slipping away.
In MS the story's similar. The Mississippi Delta counties going Democratic is what gave hope for defeating Sen. Wicker. Unfortunately the MS Dems nominated a "me too" Blue Dog Lite in Musgrove and Wicker won.
