Can Obama Win Back the Gay Community?

In what initially looked like a big deal for the gay community, the White House put out word last night that President Obama will sign a “memo” today to extend benefits to same sex partners of federal workers. Early reports suggested those benefits would include the right to health insurance, which, if true, would have gone far in soothing some of the tension between the White House and gay rights activists, who have accused Obama of breaking campaign promises to promote equality for gays and lesbians. But the president's move today likely won't be as far reaching as some had hoped.

This is damage comtrol. It is next to nothing, and it wouldn't be happening if we weren't all so pissed off.

I think Obama and his staff have made a HUGE miscalculation.

The announcement today was so obviously a lot of meaningless window dressing, and I think it did more damage than good as far relations with the gay community go.

It made me furious, and I don't think I'm alone in feeling that way.

I'd be willing to wait a bit longer. Obama was elected for a four-year term. I don't think he has to get everything done in the first six months of his administration.
