A cicada emerging from its shell. They've been a bit quieter than usual this summer

They're practically nonexistent here in Vegas. Normally every summer, it sounds like laborers firing up their leaf blowers all day long out here.

Hrmmm. Do they usually come out in daytime where you live? Back in West Texas, they came from the ground only after dark and broke out of their shells around midnight.

That's a great pic. I always see the shells, but I've not seen so fresh of a molting.

We used to get 17 year locusts (cicadas) in Chicago, but I have never heard them here in the San Francisco Bay Area... I kinda miss the mess and the noise....

We get them up here but they only buzz in high summer (usually those one or two weeks of hot weather we get in July before snow comes back).

In 2004 we were visiting Baltimore and there was some kind of 13-year or 17-year irruption of them. The noise was deafening and the bugs were thick on everything.
