Maybe you don't realize just how competitive and nationalistic science can be? Suppressing a major discovery like that would be akin to purposefully throwing every event and competitor at the Olympics.
Great national pride is taken in scientific discoveries and the two most competitive branches, IMO, are physics and medicine.
An advance like that wouldn't, no couldn't, stay suppressed very long. Another country's doctors would soon step up to claim the prize... and most like the Nobel for a HIV cure.
