Who is the guy?

The Most Reverend Dr. Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury

You forgot his other major credential: Occasional Screaming Nutjob.

I still haven't forgiven him for his moment of total flaming idiocy advocating that Great Britain adopt sharia family law for Islamic families.

Which sharia?

Which lineage? Based on which collection of hadiths? Which cultural sphere, Arab or Indonesian or Pakistani or other? Sunni? Shi'a?

I had no idea that Williams had suggested such a silly thing. There was brief consideration of the same for family court in Ontario, the suggestion went no where (for, among other things, the reasons I cited above). Thankfully.

Williams didn’t specify. His sharia proposal was so poorly reasoned that I couldn’t decide whether to laugh at it or be outraged at the suggestion.

Muslims already have the right to have sharia of their choice applied in family law and contracts, as long as all parties agree to the invocation and no criminal punishments entail. If you want to go into binding arbitration and both sides agree to an arbitrator who will apply sharia, well, that’s your right. So to the extent he’s saying “sharia will eventually be applied in family law and contracts when all parties agree to it,” as he claims he was saying… well, gee, Rowan, it’s been happening in the uk and the us for a couple of centuries now, thanks for paying attention.

To the extent he’s saying “sharia should be applied to Muslims regardless of whether they wish it to be applied to their matter,” there I begin to reach for my shotgun while muttering something about ridding myself of a troublesome priest.

Well, they're both puppets, but the one on the left has more hands up his ass.

Hmm yes this picture explains why we've never seen a picture of him before with a toothy grin.

They really need to have an Extreme Make Over portion of the Lambeth Conference. Oh no wait that would mean letting gay people inside the secured zone of the conference. Scratch that idea.

When you look at pictures like this and of +Bob Duncan you really have to ask, "don't these men have wives who tell them how silly they look?"
