Ike has shutdown 20% of the nation's refining capacity.

Here in the middle of D/FW, we've seen 15¢ increases just today ($3.46 this AM - $3.61 this evening).

Dave and I expect another 15¢ - 25¢ increase overnight.

(Gasoline is reported at $4.85 per gallon on the wholesale market currently. This is gonna get ugly)

I'm glad the only natural disaster I have even the slightest worry about is the odd tornado once every decade or so.

Oh, we do tornadoes several times every 6 months.

Urgh!

It's even worse in Canada. I filled up one of our cars yesterday afternoon around 4, and paid $1.234 Canadian per litre at the cheapest spot in town. This morning the same station was charging $1.367 per litre, which (if my math is right) is $5.17 per US gallon. At the CDN -> US conversion rate I heard on the news this afternoon, that comes to $4.89 US per gallon as of around 10:15 this AM in Stouffville, ON, just north of Toronto.

With every passing day, I'm happier and happier that both of our cars are hybrids...

Just about - $4.80 is what CNN says right now. With the amount I drive I envy just about anyone who has a hybrid... fortunately I'm moving so that my 77km daily commute is reduced to just under 5km a day.

We were being Eaten Alive by gas costs a few years ago - we had a Dodge Dakota extended-cab 4WD pickup that, on a good day, got around 10 MPG around Atlanta. 4 days before Katrina passed over south Florida, we ordered what it was being traded in on, a Honda Insight.

After Katrina, you couldn't find an Insight in the southeastern U.S. In fact, thanks to the fact that we'd already put down our deposit, we got the Insight that was south of the Ohio River and east of the Mississippi. THE ONLY Insight that would be available in a 13-state region for a 3-month period.

My perspective is somewhat unique, as we've just moved from Nashville, TN, to Stouffville. Literally "just moved" - our belongings were delivered by Allied Van Lines this past Tuesday. We came to Canada in May, and I returned to Nashville in mid-August to arrange for the movers. I spent 3 weeks in Tennessee, Ohio and Michigan just wanting to Slap The Ever-Loving Fucking Shit out of folks who were bitching about having to pay $3.50-ish per gallon for gas. :-PPPP

The gas buddy site I mentioned below has a CanEHdian version as well here: http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_can_gastemperaturemap.aspx

If I had it my way I wouldn't be driving at all. Once I get our new computer shop up and running I will finally get that wish. It is located within walking distance of our house.

I'm actually full of gas!

I filled up everything earlier. This site: http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_gastemperaturemap.aspx has a very good map of local station prices as reported by users. It seems to be slow going at the moment. The server is probably overloaded by drivers looking for cheap gas in their neighborhood. It was $3.50 for regular and $4.00 for super here today. I don't do the 9/10 thing. That needs to be banned everywhere. No one uses fucking pennies anymore, let alone tenths of pennies.

As witnessed by my family on the east coast, one station hiked itself all the way to $5.19/gal today.

At least one chain in my area jumped the prices at all their corporate-owned stations by over $1/gal.

Over here in Atlanta, I drove past a QT during the day that had regular for 3.79 on my way out to meet my boyfriend for drinks. Passing the same station about 4 hours later, it was 4.19. At least a few BP stations presumably stopped selling gas altogether because they can only change their price once a day and didn't want to miss out on all the extra ca$h. Bastards. They weren't out. They said they weren't selling any.
