Just that, rumor.
At this point, it's clear that the $99 iPhone 3G rumor was just that: rumor. Here's a letter that believed to be authentic from a source within Walmart that says the iPhone will launch in the house that Sam built at 9am December 28th. At launch, only the 8GB ($197) and 16GB ($297) iPhone 3Gs will be available with a required signature on a 2-year AT&T contract. An internal pilot program kicks off today at 488 stores across the nation. The iPhone 3G and a sack of garden manurer all under the same roof... heaven.

This is curious:
3) Each store will receive 5 iPhones
4) The phones will only be sold to associates
5c) All phones must be sold
What happens if a store doesn't have 5 associates willing to buy iPhones? :)

Well, it won't be any of the stores in Vermont. AT&T Wireless doesn't operate here.

Whatever we as "first-tier consumers" might think, from Apple's perspective it's a smart decision.

I'm more intrigued by the engadget wireless watermark on the paper. That seems odd.

The image was probably snarfed from Engadget's site... doesn't seem odd to me.

Doh! You're right. The watermark is on the photo, not on the paper.

ATT does not allow any corp discounts on an Iphone account for equipment or monthly services..

I find the sack of manure to be a bit more useful.

Even if they were selling them for $4.99 and 99¢ a month with unlimited minutes, data and SMS I wouldn't buy one from VoldeMart.
