I wonnder if Pink Floyd had *any idea* how meta-Gay this album art was ...

Probably not.

I know I'm being a real snob (or "taste-specific", your call) by saying this, but ... obsidian triangles and a-rainbow-of-computer-cables are from the the "Shocking Gray" era of gay sensibility. Which - praise gawd - is very much over.

I strongly doubt the idea was even an inkling of thought. DSotM was released 17 March, 1971 - ~21 months post-Stonewall. My recollection of gay iconography isn't that great, but I think the rainbow flag was created later, ~1978.

You are fairly spot on in your time line. The album art was designed by Hipgnosis who did all the Album covers for Pink Floyd as well as many other bands in the 70's. It was designed so they could be displayed in stores with albums displayed side by side, front - back - front - back and form a continuous light beam to rainbow to light beam to rainbow.

Oh lord, I'm such a music geek of that era. *sigh*

Clever, clever.

I just listened to the 5.1 mix the other day...

Indeed. And the 5.1 remix is superb, totally appropriate for an album like DSofM.

I'd LOVE to see that done with Meddle. A 5.1 mix of Echoes would so ROCK.

Alas, 5.1 audio mixes are dead in the water at the moment. And that's not even counting all the remixes they had in the can before the record companies decided it "wasn't worth" their time and effort to release them (Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk," anyone?). Grrr.

They were doing surround sound live in concert since 1970 If the group were still together I'm sure they would have been all behind remastering. OK, I'm a total Pink Floyd geek. I started seeing them live in 1970 and became totally dedicated to them. They would even have a black out segment. Darken the entire theater and do fun audio effects in total darkness. The loss of 5.1 music is a sad thing. I really like it. *sigh*

A sysadmin/cryptography buddy of mine in the UK was a Pink Floyd roady in the 80s - major geek cred there.

Pretty, but I find USB devices leave a spider web of cabling even more obnoxious than that of the C-64. I like to tuck mine all away when possible.

In the dorms at Michigan Tech when I was there (starting 89), many of the "houses" had various forms of mural artwork painted on the walls. The pink floyd album was one of them.

Of course, the year I also started was the year that they started quashing individual expression as much as possible. The murals were steadily removed and the joys of "political correctness" made their way around campus.

Why do I get the impression that it’s not only too gay but also too big for my desk?
