I drink so little carbonated soft drinks, but I'm very tempted to buy a couple cases of each of these. Cane sugar instead of HFCS.

From BevReview.com:
Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback

This is a big deal since mainstream soft drinks in the United States are sweetened with High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). Typically, the only way to get soda from the "big guys" with real sugar is to import it (i.e., Mexican Coke) or wait till Passover (Kosher Coke, Kosher Pepsi).

Pepsi has been experimenting elsewhere with sugar-sweetened drinks. We reported last February about two such entries… Pepsi Raw in the UK and Mexico's Pepsi Retro. It's nice to see some of this finally coming to the States.

Both should be showing up on store shelves around the country. This was reported Tuesday night on NPR's All Things Considered.

In Australia they've never used high-fructose corn syrup in any soda drinks at all.

And I would imagine you don't have the prevalence of obesity and diabetes that exists in the US.

Here in Spain…

They use cane sugar. It's difficult to find HFCS. And although health authorities complain about obesity (and fast-food), it is less of a problem than in the US. They like to extol the virtues of the "Mediterranean diet." Most "sweets" here have less sugar than similar products in the US.

A joke here is: "What is the difference between Spanish and US bears?
Answer: about 20 kilos."

Chuck, it's surprising about the effects of keeping the corn growers in Iowa happy

Actually, in Australia, we have cane sugar, but we also have the unenviable title of the most obese nation in the world, only taking over the USA last year. It's not just HFCS that's making America fat, it's an excess of calories in all forms.

I might buy a six-pack of the Dew ... though I'll probably have to take an extra dose of metformin with each can. ;)

Here's hoping this creates a response over at Coca-Cola....

As you said to me, folks aren't exactly thrilled w/ HFCS these days...and with good reason. That shit has not helped with the conditions you and I and the rest of the diabetic bears community have....

I tried the Pepsi Throwback here in Denver, and...I guess it's just me, but I couldn't really taste the difference. Maybe I'll have to hold a side-by-side comparison. I'll be looking for the Dew Throwback...I'm really interested in tasting that!

Woofer, I picked some up at Target the other day - 3 12packs for $10... the same price the regular Pepsi stuff was going for.

It's still available in some places, like Michigan.

Coke Zero is very, very similar in taste though.

I really liked Pepsi Retro. More so than the drink itself (hey, we do have sugar sweetened softdrinks), was the whole packaging. They came in these cute crystal bottles and looked like if they were antiques by themselves.

I've gotten Kosher Coke around Passover time - and was surprised at how much of a taste difference there was! I can definitely tell the sugar version from the HFCS. I sure hope Coke picks up on the trend. Maybe if we all go out and buy as much Pepsi Throwback as possible, they'll get the message?

George, [livejournal.com profile] furr_a_bruin, blogs about Kosher Coke every year around Passover. We don't have enough Jewish population density to see it on shelves around here. One of the guys on FB pointed me towards los mercados as the Coke from Mexico has never had HFCS (Hecho en Mexico).

I've found both products to be quite good. The Mountain Dew by far tastes much better than the HFCS stuff (and I love the Dew - though I mainly get diet). Since I'm a big diet soda drinker, it took a lot for me to actually drink this stuff, but I got 2-12 packs of the Dew and I'm on the second 12-pack (over 2 weeks ago, so not that bad - I still drink diet stuff for the most part).

I'm headed to Target tomorrow to pick up some. I'm old (ancient?) enough to remember what most of the major soft drinks tasted like before the blight of HFCS.

I admit, as a kid I was a Coke drinker, not a Pepsi drinker.

So, the throwback Pepsi is okay... better than Pepsi (normal), but it isn't the Coke of my past.

I need to find a supply of Mexican/Passover Coke. :P
