I once saw an interview with Simmons in which he said that he encouraged people to laugh with him, and he also encouraged them to laugh at him. If people want to laugh with him, then he'll laugh all the harder. If people want to laugh at him... well. He's got thick skin. He can take it. And every second they spend laughing at him is one less second they can spend laughing at vulnerable people.
At that moment I knew that I would happily buy him a beer (or a bottled water, as he preferred) if we ever met.
