After only 30 years...
"The original CompuServe service, first offered in 1979, was shut down by its current owner, AOL this past week. The service, which provided its users addresses such as 73402,3893, was the first major online service although the number of users has dwindled in recent years. "

Wow, that item really took me back.

I remember when I first signed up for AOL, back when their IDs had to be 8 letters or less and AOL was struggling to get up to 70,000 users worldwide so as to move past industry leader CompuServe. TeddyB was about the only thing I could think of that fit, and that has been my AOL ID ever since.

I kept my old CompuServe account for years and years, mostly because it was the only way for me to access a service offered by the US Postal Service that allowed me to generate messages electronically that were then printed in local post offices for delivery.

When the USPS shut that down, I ran out of reasons to try and remember that damned CompuServe ID, and I finally closed my account.

Oh my...I remember nights in my parents basement, channel 33, and on edge whenever I'd hear a footstep upstairs. 76703,3537

Awwww... there goes 74055,751, hour after hour on Channel 33, and two years of running the gay section of the HSX forum. I'm bummed.

I was 73727,3530.

I greet Compu$erve’s passing with savagely mixed feelings.

*chuckle* I can just imagine.

You get that note about pgp.mit.edu. We lost our favorite server-bash target this week too. we think there's only one or two PKS servers still around.
