Where'd you find the image? I'm apparently not so old school after all. Other than the first run of AD&D Monster Manual, I've never saw those covers or display racks ---(haha, "rack")--- like that for sale just the printings that came after (with better art, likely Jeff Easley).
A 1st edition party had a magic-user with d4 for hit points, one spell per day. That, and other reasons means a 1st edition party would be killed by a 2nd edition party; which in turn would be butchered by a 3rd edition party; and the 4th edition would easily slaughterize them all without spending "healing surges." Not that might makes right, but there have been some positive changes, jungle women notwithstanding.
