'Bout time. From /.:
"Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger requested $4.7 billion in federal stimulus money Friday to help build an 800-mile bullet train system from San Diego to San Francisco. 'We're traveling on our trains at the same speed as 100 years ago,' the governor said. 'That is inexcusable. America must catch up.' Planners said the train would be able to travel from Los Angeles to San Francisco in two hours and 40 minutes, traveling at speeds of more than 200 miles per hour. About time! There comes a point when 'let's add another lane' is no longer a viable option!"

It's the same here, they have been dragging their feet on fast trains between Sydney and melbourne for years. Once California has something though(like record obesity,Disneyland and Academy awards) we usually want it to.

Is there a massive ($4.7 b) need for people to travel from San Diego to SF? Who is going to use this train? $4.7 b would go a long way to developing short range, public transportation options that could ease congestion and take cars off the street.

What, no AVE?

Let me know when there is something like the ATM available in the SF Bay Area, for example. And the richest country in the world can afford both.
