I've had good luck with Tomato (far better than the shitware that ships with most Linksys routers), but a lot of folks swear by DD-WRT.

I was running it out-of-the-box. My needs are so pedestrian my routers should come with a pair of shoes.

Coworkers seem to enjoy tomato. We just stick with an airport at home right now.
