The 20 Worst Restaurant Foods in America

Men’s Health went out and gathered some of the worse stuff to eat in the restaurant and wrote “The 20 Worst Restaurant Foods in America”.

It seems that a favorite eatery of some of my friends, "Cheesecake Factory” has a few items to avoid on this list... but most folks know that already.

Indulge. Go ahead. But be mindful of what your sticking in your mouth.

The problem with this advice is that Americans today eat out more than four times per week, and when it comes to gauging the nutrition of these meals, we are demonstrably ill equipped for the task. The point is that it’s easier to bite off more than you think you’re chewing. Some of the meals on this list can skyrocket your day’s caloric intake 1,500 calories beyond what you should be eating. Do that just once a week and you’re facing 22 extra pounds of flab in a year’s time. Use this guide to make better choices, and start learning how you can still enjoy the foods you love—but lose weight, too.

This actually comes from a book "Eat This, Not That". It's one in a series. I have the companion book "Cook This, Not That" which is a real eye-opener, and is just an excellent little cook-book.

The book makes the point that if you eat out a lot, it's almost inevitable that you'll gain weight, in part because even though we may choose relatively low cal, low fat items from the menu, portion size is such a huge problem in North America.

Yikes.

I generally only eat out when I have guests or when I travel. I've never been in a Cheesecake Factory or an Outback.

On the other hand, ranch dressing IS about the only thing I've found that can make a salad palatable... and the "low fat" versions are generally loaded with sugar and starch in compensation so as a diabetic - bring on the fat. ;)

I skip the "Low-fat" junk for the same reason -- "Low Fat" != "Low Calorie" and too often "Low Fat" = "High Carb" (and spiky carbs at that).

You think you need to worry about the elevated sugar and starch content in "low fat" foods? Take a look at the sodium numbers and be prepared for a real shock.

Many years ago I read that between fats, carbs and salt, if something is "low" on one of 'em then it's gonna peg the meter on one or both of the other.

I am convinced that there is a "commie plot" intent on fattening everyone. Look at the hamburger as an example. We went from a simple hamburger to a cheeseburger. Then, we added "secret sauce", larger patties, more cheese, an extra patty, then, bacon, bacon and more bacon.

Soft drinks went from 6 oz. bottles to 64 oz. servings.

And, when they give us something that might have a little "healthy" potential to it, like fish or chicken, they bread it, batter it, and deep-fry it, with a mayonnaise dressing and a slice of cheese.

Some of them did make me slightly hungry.

If you're after something that will put you off food in general for a while, go here.

Damn. Now I'm really hungry. And there isn't a Claim Jumper or TGI Fridays in sight.
