Not sure if it will be very helpful, but you CAN find people in FB by e-mail address. It's another step between LJ and actual names, but it's something....
It's been nice to see people's full names. Then again, I'm still more likely to remember someone's LJ handle.
I think either system can be readily hacked to provide on-hover info for the cross-ref. In the case of LJ, you can probably submit a patch for the perl yourself.
Failing that, if you're willing to keep a manual database, you could probably build a firefox plugin in XUL. :-)
